Overview
Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybridus) is one of the most popular cut flowers in India, valued for its tall, elegant spikes lined with funnel shaped florets in a wide range of colours. Unlike many high value flowers, gladiolus grows well in the open field without a polyhouse, which makes it accessible to ordinary farmers, and it is among the leading cut flowers in the country by area. It is grown from corms, the underground storage organs, which multiply each season so a grower can build up planting stock over time. The crop takes about three to four months from planting to spike, and the corms and small cormels lifted at the end add to the income and the next planting. Gladiolus suits a cool to mild season, good light and well drained soil, and is grown across many states. Climate
Gladiolus grows best in a cool to mild season with day temperatures around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and bright sunshine, which is why it is planted in the cooler months in the plains and through summer in the hills. Very high heat shortens spikes and reduces floret number, while frost can damage the crop. Good light is needed for strong, tall spikes, and it does not need a protected structure in suitable seasons.
Soil
Gladiolus prefers a fertile, well drained loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter, with a pH of about 6.0 to 7.5. The corms rot in heavy, waterlogged soil, so good drainage is essential, and beds or ridges are used to help drainage. The field is prepared deep with well rotted manure mixed in. Avoid soils where waterlogging occurs after rain.
Planting & Spacing
Healthy corms are planted in furrows or on beds about 30 by 15 centimetres to 30 by 20 centimetres apart and a few centimetres deep, giving a high plant density per hectare. Tall spikes are earthed up or staked so they do not fall over, especially in windy areas. The field is kept weed free and well drained, and corms are not allowed to sit in standing water. Timely care during the spike emergence stage is important for straight, marketable spikes.

Common pests are thrips, which damage florets, along with aphids, cutworms and corm storage pests, while major diseases include Fusarium corm rot and wilt, Botrytis, leaf and flower spots and corm dry rot. Planting only healthy treated corms, ensuring good drainage, rotating fields and treating corms before storage are the main controls. Yield & Harvest
Spikes are ready about three to four months after planting and are cut when the lowest one or two florets show colour but are not fully open, leaving four or more leaves on the plant so the corm can mature.
