Updated: 3 October 2026
A small unit of 10 does and 1 buck needed about ₹1.25 lakh for local goats and ₹1.48 lakh for Osmanabadi or Sangamneri type goats in NABARD's 2023-24 unit costs for Maharashtra. The same NABARD rates give about ₹2.81 lakh for 20+1 and ₹6.94 lakh for 50+2, and a 100+5 reference project is costed at ₹14.12 lakh.
Animal prices vary by breed, age, season and festival. NABARD's ₹8,000 per doe and ₹10,000 per buck are bank planning rates for one state in one year, not market quotes. Check the local rate at your nearest goat market and replace the doe and buck lines before relying on any total here.
A 10+1 unit: NABARD unit cost 2023-24
This is the only goat unit size costed in NABARD's Maharashtra regional office booklet, approved by its State Level Unit Cost Committee on 30 May 2023. NABARD says the unit costs are indicative and banks may arrive at their own.
| Item (10 does + 1 buck) | Osmanabadi, Sangamneri, Konkan Kanyal, Berari type (₹) | Non-descript goats (₹) | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does | 80,000 | 60,000 | 10 x ₹8,000; 10 x ₹6,000 |
| Buck | 10,000 | 8,000 | 1 x ₹10,000; 1 x ₹8,000 |
| Low-cost shed | 45,000 | 45,000 | ₹200 per sq ft; 20 sq ft per buck, 10 per doe, 4 per kid |
| Feeders and water equipment | 1,100 | 1,100 | 11 animals x ₹100 |
| Capital cost | 1,36,100 | 1,14,100 | Sum of the four lines above |
| Insurance | 4,500 | 3,400 | 5% of the cost of adults (₹90,000; ₹68,000) |
| Vaccination and vet aid | 1,100 | 1,100 | 11 animals x ₹100 |
| Concentrate feed | 6,263 | 6,263 | Does: 10 x 7.5 kg x 3 months x ₹25 = ₹5,625. Buck: 8.5 kg x 3 months x ₹25 = ₹637.50 |
| Running cost (one time) | 11,863 | 10,763 | Sum of the three lines above |
| Total outlay | 1,47,963 | 1,24,863 | Capital plus running cost |
| Margin money (15%) | 22,194 | 18,729 | 15% of the total |
| Bank loan (85%) | 1,25,768 | 1,06,133 | 85% of the total |
- The booklet labels the running cost "for one time only". It covers insurance, vet aid and three months of concentrate, not a full year of feed, fodder and labour.
- Arithmetic check: 1,36,100 + 11,863 = 1,47,963, and 1,14,100 + 10,763 = 1,24,863.
20+1 and 50+2: the same rates, scaled
NABARD's booklet lists only 10+1. The table below applies its rates to larger flocks. These are Farmer.in calculations, not NABARD figures, and use the Osmanabadi-type prices.
| Item | 10+1 (NABARD) | 20+1 (derived) | 50+2 (derived) | Working for the derived columns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Does at ₹8,000 | 80,000 | 1,60,000 | 4,00,000 | 20 x 8,000; 50 x 8,000 |
| Bucks at ₹10,000 | 10,000 | 10,000 | 20,000 | 1 x 10,000; 2 x 10,000 |
| Shed at ₹200 per sq ft | 45,000 | 86,000 | 2,13,000 | 430 sq ft; 1,065 sq ft (see below) |
| Equipment at ₹100 per animal | 1,100 | 2,100 | 5,200 | 21 and 52 animals |
| Capital cost | 1,36,100 | 2,58,100 | 6,38,200 | Sum of four lines |
| Insurance (5% of adults) | 4,500 | 8,500 | 21,000 | 5% of ₹1,70,000; 5% of ₹4,20,000 |
| Vet aid at ₹100 per animal | 1,100 | 2,100 | 5,200 | 21 and 52 animals |
| Concentrate | 6,263 | 11,888 | 29,400 | 20 x 562.50 + 637.50; 50 x 562.50 + 2 x 637.50 |
| Running cost (one time) | 11,863 | 22,488 | 55,600 | Sum of three lines |
| Total outlay | 1,47,963 | 2,80,588 | 6,93,800 | Capital plus running cost |
| Margin (15%) | 22,194 | 42,088 | 1,04,070 | 15% of the total |
| Loan (85%) | 1,25,768 | 2,38,500 | 5,89,730 | 85% of the total, rounded |
- Shed area: NABARD's ₹45,000 at ₹200 per sq ft is 225 sq ft. Adults need 10 x 10 + 20 = 120 sq ft, which leaves 105 sq ft for kids. That kid area is scaled with the number of does: 20+1 needs 220 + 210 = 430 sq ft, and 50+2 needs 500 + 40 + 525 = 1,065 sq ft.
- These totals leave out land, fodder cultivation, labour, a water tank and electricity. Keep them in your own budget.
A 100+5 reference project
The 100+5 size is the smallest unit the National Livestock Mission subsidises (see loan and subsidy). A Black Bengal reference project for this size is published on the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyoga Yojana portal. The document carries no year, so its prices are not dated.
- Capital: 100 does at ₹5,000 = ₹5,00,000; 5 bucks at ₹8,000 = ₹40,000; shed ₹4,31,000; water, power and equipment ₹91,750. Total ₹10,62,750.
- Total cost: ₹10,62,750 + ₹3,49,250 (first-year running cost and interest) = ₹14,12,000. Loan ₹7,97,000 at 10%; promoter's share ₹6,15,000.
- Income from year 2: 115 male kids x ₹5,000 = ₹5,75,000 and 115 female kids x ₹4,000 = ₹4,60,000, plus gunny bags and a cull animal, giving ₹10,40,750 a year. Year 1 has no sales because kids are sold at 11 months.
- Assumptions behind it: litter size 2, 1.5 kiddings a year, 90% kidding, 15% kid deaths. Check these against the breed chart on goat breeds, where ICAR units record litter or kidding rates of 1.05 to 1.78.
What a unit can earn
| Where the figure comes from | Figure | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| ICAR-CIRG Annual Report 2024, Marwari unit, Bikaner (2024-25) | ₹3,631 | Income per goat per year |
| ICAR-CIRG Annual Report 2024, Osmanabadi unit, Maharashtra (2024-25) | ₹10,500 | Income per doe per year |
| ICAR-CIRG Annual Report 2024, Malabari unit, north Kerala (2024-25) | ₹16,520 | Net return per goat per year |
- For 10 goats: 10 x ₹3,631 = ₹36,310; 10 x ₹10,500 = ₹1,05,000; 10 x ₹16,520 = ₹1,65,200. The report does not say how much feed cost is already deducted, except for Malabari, which is stated as net.
- Cross-check with the project sheet: 2 kids x 1.5 kiddings x 0.90 = 2.7 kids per doe a year. After 15% deaths that is 2.7 x 0.85 = about 2.3 sold, and 2.3 x ₹4,500 (average of ₹5,000 and ₹4,000) = ₹10,350 per doe, close to the Osmanabadi figure.
- A weaker year: 1.2 kids sold per doe at ₹4,500 = ₹5,400 per doe, or ₹54,000 for 10 does, before feed and labour.
Before putting money in
- Get the local price of does, bucks and 8 to 11 month kids from two or three sellers, and rework the tables with those.
- Count land, fodder, labour and a reserve for deaths separately. NABARD's one-time running cost does not cover them.
- Size a loan with the EMI calculator and read about the Kisan Credit Card. The goat farming guide has a worked 10+1 feed budget.
