Wheat Brown Rust (Leaf Rust) Control

Affects: Wheat
Wheat Brown Rust (Leaf Rust) symptoms and control in Wheat

Symptoms

Small round to oval orange brown powdery pustules scattered randomly mainly on the upper surface of the leaf blade and sometimes on leaf sheaths. Unlike yellow rust the pustules are not in stripes but spread irregularly over the leaf. The orange brown powder rubs off on the fingers. It develops in slightly warmer conditions than yellow rust and is common across the plains in the later part of the season.

Damage

Brown rust is the most widespread wheat rust in India. Severe infection reduces green leaf area, causes early drying of leaves, poor grain filling and shrivelled grains, with yield losses commonly of 10 to 30 percent and up to higher levels on very susceptible varieties when it appears early.

Organic & cultural control

Grow resistant varieties recommended for your region as the main defence. Sow on time, use balanced fertiliser and avoid excess nitrogen which makes the crop more susceptible. Remove volunteer and self sown wheat plants between seasons. Scout regularly during grain filling and inform your KVK when the first orange brown spots appear so the area can be monitored.

Chemical control

If brown rust appears and is spreading, spray a registered triazole fungicide such as propiconazole 25 EC or tebuconazole, or a tebuconazole plus trifloxystrobin combination, ensuring good leaf coverage and repeating as per label if needed. Always follow the product label dose, respect the pre harvest interval and consult your KVK or agronomist before spraying.

Always follow the product label, the recommended pre-harvest interval, and your local KVK or agronomist. Pesticide approvals change, so verify before use.

Prevention

Use certified seed of resistant varieties and rotate varieties as resistance breaks down over years. Sow at the recommended time, keep fertiliser balanced and avoid dense, over nitrogen crops. Destroy crop residue and volunteer plants that carry spores. Stay in touch with KVK rust advisories for your zone.

FAQs

How is brown rust different from yellow rust?
Brown rust gives small round orange brown pustules scattered randomly across the leaf, while yellow rust gives bright yellow pustules in long parallel stripes along the veins. Brown rust also tends to appear later in the season in slightly warmer weather than yellow rust.
Will brown rust spread to my whole field?
Yes, brown rust spreads quickly by wind borne spores especially in humid weather with dew, so it can move across the field and to neighbouring fields within days. Early scouting and timely fungicide spray on a few affected plants help stop it from becoming an epidemic.
Does brown rust reduce my grain quality?
Yes, severe brown rust dries the leaves early so grains do not fill properly and become shrivelled with lower test weight, which reduces both yield and the price you get. Protecting the crop during grain filling is therefore important.
