Unseasonal rain with some hail has flattened part of my wheat and damaged vegetables near harvest. What are the immediate steps to limit the loss and claim insurance?

Act quickly on both the field and the insurance. In the field, drain standing water fast to prevent rotting and sprouting, gently prop or harvest crop that is mature enough to save, and dry harvested grain or produce as soon as weather allows to stop fungal damage and germination. For insurance under PMFBY, report the damage to your insurance company, bank or the official helpline or app within the notification window (commonly within 72 hours of the event) for localised calamities like hail and inundation, and keep photos and details of the affected area. Also inform the local agriculture or revenue office, since government may order a damage survey for relief. Do not clear or replough the damaged field before the survey if you want it assessed. Confirm the exact reporting deadline and process for your policy.

Drain the water off the field fast; standing water finished a neighbour's wheat that was otherwise salvageable. I harvested what was mature enough and dried it quickly the moment the weather cleared. Speed in the field limits a lot of the loss.

After hail I reported within 72 hours on the crop insurance app with photos, and that record helped during the survey. Drain water immediately, standing water finished my neighbour's crop that was still salvageable.

On the insurance side I reported within the 72 hour window on the crop insurance app with photos of the damaged area, and that record helped during the survey. Do not replough the field before the survey or you lose the claim. Confirm your policy's exact deadline.
