For Malwa black soils, JG 11, JG 14 and JAKI 9218 are among the most popular desi chana varieties because they are wilt tolerant and mature in about 100 to 110 days. JG 11 performs well under rainfed conditions and gives 18 to 22 quintal per hectare with good management; JAKI 9218 is favoured for its bold grain and machine harvest suitability. Sow from late October to mid November on conserved soil moisture, treat seed with Trichoderma and Rhizobium, and keep plant population around 30 to 33 plants per square metre. Avoid late sowing as it raises wilt and pod borer risk. Confirm exact recommended varieties with your KVK or RVSKVV Gwalior for your district.

I grow JAKI 9218 near Indore for three years now. Bold grain sells well and one light irrigation at pod filling gave me a good jump in yield. JG 11 is more dependable when rains fail early.

One caution from my experience in Dewas: do not over irrigate desi chana on heavy black soil. The crop is sensitive to excess water and waterlogged patches developed wilt and yellowing for me. A single light irrigation at pod filling is plenty if the soil held good monsoon moisture.

If you want a kabuli type instead of desi, JGK 3 and Ujjawal are grown in parts of Malwa for the bigger market price, but they need better moisture and are more wilt prone than JG 11. For pure rainfed land most farmers here stay with desi. Get certified seed from a reliable source as duplicate seed is a real problem in the market.
