Amla is a hardy tree that suits dryland and marginal soils, but it benefits greatly from cross-pollination, so you should plant more than one compatible variety together rather than a single variety block. Many improved amla varieties set fruit poorly when planted alone, so interplanting a pollinizer variety improves fruit set and yield. Use grafted plants of recommended varieties from a reliable nursery, plant at wide spacing because the trees grow large, and ensure good drainage. Once established, amla tolerates drought well and gives a dependable crop with low input. For the right variety combination and spacing for your area, confirm with your state horticulture department or KVK.

We made the mistake of planting a single variety block in Pratapgarh at first and the fruit set was disappointing. After we interplanted a second compatible variety as a pollinizer, the set and yield improved clearly. Mix the varieties from the start, do not learn it the hard way like we did.

Amla has been a dependable crop on our marginal sandy patch where little else paid, it handles the drought and poor soil well once established. We used grafted plants of recommended varieties from a good nursery so the variety was true and they started bearing reasonably early. Seedling amla is too variable, the grafts were worth the extra cost.

Give the trees wide spacing because they grow large and a crowded amla orchard is hard to manage and pick. We also keep the field well drained, since even a hardy tree sulks if water stands in a wet spell. Arrange the pollinizer variety rows so they are spread through the block, not all in one corner, so the cross-pollination reaches the whole orchard.
