I want to keep my own seed to save money but last year it got spoiled and germination was poor. How do I save and store farm seed properly?

You can save your own seed only from open pollinated or self-pollinated crops, not from hybrids. Start in the field by selecting healthy, true-to-type, disease-free plants and harvesting them separately when fully mature. Dry the seed well, the moisture should be low enough that a seed snaps rather than bends (cereals and pulses store best at low moisture), and clean out chaff, broken seed and weed seed. Treat against storage insects as recommended on the label, then store in clean, dry, airtight containers (metal bins, good plastic drums, or properly sealed bags) in a cool, dry, rodent-free place off the floor. Neem leaves or recommended storage practices help against pests. Before the next sowing, always run a germination test, because even well-stored seed loses vigour over time. Keep each variety separate and labelled. For the right drying moisture and storage treatment for your specific crop, confirm with your KVK.

Drying is everything. I now dry on a tarpaulin for extra days and store in a sealed steel drum. No weevil problem since.

Keep it off the floor. My bags on the bare floor absorbed damp last monsoon and germination dropped. Wooden pallet fixed it.

Always do the germination test before sowing saved seed. Mine was only 70 percent so I raised the seed rate and still got a full stand.
