Citrus canker is a bacterial disease that makes raised corky brown spots with a yellow halo on leaves, twigs, and fruit, and it spreads fast in warm wet windy weather. Management is mainly preventive: use clean planting material, prune and destroy badly infected twigs in dry weather, and put up windbreaks because wind-driven rain and leaf miner wounds spread the bacteria. Leaf miner control matters because its tunnels open the way for canker. Copper-based sprays at the recommended stages can check spread but cannot cure infected tissue, so timing and sanitation are key, and you should follow the label and pre-harvest interval. Confirm the spray schedule and copper product for your area with your local horticulture department or KVK.

Leaf miner control was the turning point for our acid lime near Guntur, because every miner tunnel on the new flush became a canker entry point. We protect each new flush from the miner and the canker spots on the tender leaves dropped a lot. Time it to the flush, not the calendar.

We planted a tall windbreak row on the side of the strong monsoon winds and it made a real difference, because the wind-driven rain was splashing the bacteria from tree to tree. Pruning out the badly cankered twigs in dry weather and burning them, not dropping them in the orchard, also helped. Do the pruning when it is dry, never in the rain, or you spread it.

A caution on the copper sprays in our Kagzi lime: they hold the disease back but do not cure it, and spraying copper too often in the hot season caused some leaf and fruit marking. We follow the recommended schedule and rate and stop guessing. Clean tools between trees too, because the pruning saw itself can carry the bacteria.

We disinfect the pruning tools between trees with a simple bleach dip, because the saw itself was carrying the canker down the row when we did not. It is a small step but it stopped us spreading it during the pruning rounds. Confirm a safe disinfectant strength with your KVK so you do not damage the tools or the cuts.
