Kinnow is the leading citrus of the Punjab cotton belt, especially around Abohar and Fazilka, valued for high yield and good juice. New orchards are usually established with grafted plants in the monsoon planting window or in spring, depending on water and weather, using budded plants on a suitable rootstock such as rough lemon. A common orchard spacing is about 6 m x 6 m, giving roughly 110 plants per acre, though closer high density layouts are also tried with careful canopy management. Provide good drainage, balanced nutrition, and proactive management of citrus psyllid and greening. For the exact planting time, rootstock, and spacing for your area, confirm with Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and your district horticulture office.

Around Abohar we plant kinnow at about 6 by 6 metres on rough lemon rootstock. Good drainage and managing the psyllid are key. The fruit sells well but watch the water and don't let the basins stay wet.

Our water here runs a bit salty, so the rootstock choice and not over-irrigating mattered a lot. Light frequent drip beat heavy flood watering for keeping the basins from staying soggy. Ask PAU which rootstock suits your water quality.

Kinnow tends to alternate bearing, so an on year of huge load is followed by a poor year. Fruit thinning in the heavy year and steady nutrition evened out my crop somewhat. Do not let a record on-year exhaust the trees.
