Citrus greening, also called HLB or huanglongbing, is a serious bacterial disease spread by the citrus psyllid; symptoms include blotchy mottling of leaves, yellow shoots, lopsided bitter fruit with aborted seeds, and gradual tree decline. There is no cure, so management is integrated and preventive: plant only certified disease-free saplings, control the citrus psyllid vector through monitoring and recommended insecticide sprays especially on new flush, remove and destroy infected trees promptly to cut inoculum, and maintain tree health with balanced nutrition. Area-wide community action against the psyllid is far more effective than single farms acting alone. Follow the integrated HLB and psyllid management program from the ICAR Central Citrus Research Institute, Nagpur.

The hardest advice to follow is removing an infected tree that still looks half alive, but I learned that a lingering infected tree is a reservoir that feeds the psyllid and infects the neighbours. Removing them promptly slowed the decline of the rest of my block.

Watch the new flush, because that tender growth is where the psyllid breeds and the spray needs to land. Our group times the psyllid sprays to the flush flushes together across orchards, since one farm spraying alone does little when the neighbour's trees are full of psyllids.
