Grafting a good fruiting brinjal variety (scion) onto a disease resistant rootstock lets you grow a productive crop in soils sick with bacterial wilt or nematodes where ungrafted plants fail. The rootstock resists the soil disease while the top still gives your preferred fruit type and yield. Grafted seedlings are usually bought from specialised nurseries or made under controlled humidity, and the graft union must be kept above the soil line at transplanting so the scion does not root and lose protection. Grafted plants cost more per seedling, so they pay off mainly in fields with known soil disease problems. Confirm rootstock and grafted seedling sources with your KVK or horticulture department before planting.
