Tray (plug) nursery gives uniform, disease free seedlings with no transplant shock for brinjal, chilli and capsicum. Use pro trays of around 98 cells filled with sterilised cocopeat plus vermiculite, sow one treated seed per cell, and keep trays under a 40 to 50 mesh insect net to block whitefly and the viruses they spread. Keep the media moist but not waterlogged, give light shade for the first week, and feed a dilute water soluble fertiliser after seedlings have 2 true leaves. Seedlings are usually ready to transplant in about 25 to 35 days when they have 4 to 5 true leaves and a firm root ball. Harden them in open sun for a few days before transplanting and confirm seed treatment and media ratio with your KVK.

Since I shifted brinjal seedlings to pro trays under net, my little leaf and virus problem dropped a lot. The cost per plant is higher but survival after transplant is almost full.

In Andhra I shifted my chilli and brinjal nursery to pro trays under net and the whitefly virus dropped sharply. The 50 mesh net is the key, a coarser net let small whitefly through.

A small tip: do not over sow or overwater the cocopeat. When I kept it too wet I got damping off in patches, after I let the surface dry a bit between watering the trays stayed clean.

Hardening the seedlings in open sun for a few days before transplant made a real difference for me. The trays I moved straight from shade to the field wilted badly, the hardened ones took off without a check.
