Plants where the flowers turn into leafy green structures with no seed have phyllody, a disease spread by leafhoppers, while the webbed and folded leaves are from the leaf webber caterpillar, so both relate to insect activity. For phyllody, since it is a vector borne disease there is no cure for an infected plant, so rogue out affected plants early, control the leafhopper vector, and use clean recommended seed and timely sowing. For leaf webber, scout for webbed shoots, remove and destroy them, and apply a need based insecticide as per label when infestation crosses the local threshold. Avoid late and staggered sowing that prolongs vector exposure. Get the current vector and webber management schedule and dose from your local KVK.

The phyllody plants with the leafy flowers never give seed, so the moment I spot them I pull them out and remove them from the field. Leaving them standing only lets the leafhoppers pick up the disease and carry it on. Roguing early kept it from spreading across my plot.

For the leaf webber I walk the field and nip off the webbed and folded shoots with the caterpillar inside and destroy them. Catching the webbed shoots early, before the larvae spread, kept the damage small and I needed little spraying. It is simple hand work in the early stage.
