Sesame (sesamum, til) has the highest MSP among all mandated crops; for the 2025-26 kharif marketing season it was fixed at about Rs 9,846 per quintal. Even though yields are low at roughly 3 to 6 quintal per hectare under rainfed conditions, the very high price and very low input cost make sesame attractive on light marginal soils where other crops do poorly. Market rates for good quality, especially white til, can run even higher than MSP in some years. Procurement under the Price Support Scheme is limited, so most til is sold in the open market. Confirm the current MSP and local rates before deciding, on the official agriculture ministry website.

Til suits my sandy field where moong sometimes fails. Input cost is very low and the rate is high, so even a small yield gives me reasonable money compared to leaving the land bare.

Seed colour and cleanliness decide your open market price for til, since most of it is sold to traders, not the government. Bright clean white til fetched me a clear premium, while soil and trash mixed lots were cut. I harvest, dry on a clean sheet and winnow it well before selling.

Because PSS procurement of til is limited, do not bank on the MSP being available at a centre near you. Check whether any procurement is actually notified in your district, and otherwise plan to sell in the open market where good quality often pays well anyway. Compare local trader rates before harvest.

One caution before expanding til for the high price: yields are genuinely low and a wet spell at maturity or capsule shattering can cut what you actually harvest. I keep it on marginal land as a bonus crop rather than my main income, so a bad year does not hurt much. On good land other crops gave me more total return.
