Barnyard millet (sanwa or jhangora) is a very short duration, hardy millet that matures in about 60 to 90 days, tolerates drought and poor soils, and suits hill and rainfed areas where longer crops fail. Sow with the onset of monsoon by line sowing or broadcasting on a well prepared field, keep seed rate as recommended, thin to maintain spacing, and weed early since the small seedlings compete poorly with weeds. It needs little fertiliser, responds to modest FYM and a small nitrogen dose, and faces few serious pests. Yields are modest, often roughly 8 to 15 quintals per hectare depending on variety, soil and rainfall. Its quick maturity also makes it a good catch crop or fasting-food grain with rising health demand. Use improved seed from your state agriculture university where available.

Sanwa saved my season the year rains were short, it ripened before the others. Early weeding is the main effort.

In Madhya Pradesh I switched from broadcasting to line sowing and weeding became far easier between the rows, which lifted my yield. The crop is hardy but it will not give much if weeds smother the small seedlings.

One caution: harvest as soon as it is mature, because the small grains shatter and fall if you leave it standing. I lost grain to shattering once by waiting too long for the whole field to dry evenly.
