A woman can start a small dairy through her SHG by combining group credit, training and a steady milk market, and dairy is a common path to becoming a Lakhpati Didi. Join or strengthen your SHG, then take a collateral free loan to buy one or two good milch animals, with cheaper interest available on small SHG loans through the rural livelihood mission. Tie up with a local dairy cooperative or milk union so your milk is collected daily and paid regularly, which is more reliable than selling loose. Cut feed cost by growing green fodder yourself. Get training on animal health, clean milking and feeding from your KVK or the dairy union, and insure the animals through the vet department. Start small, reinvest profit into one more animal, and keep daily records of milk and expenses. In Bihar contact your block livelihood mission and the local milk union to begin.

I started with one cow through our SHG loan and now have three. Selling to the cooperative every morning means money is sure. Growing my own fodder is what keeps profit alive, bought feed is costly. Insure the animals, I learnt that the hard way after losing one.

Our women group took dairy training from the milk union first, that helped avoid mistakes with sick animals. Start with one animal, do not borrow too much at once. Daily milk record tells you the real profit. Within two years I crossed good income.

Choose a good breed animal that gives steady milk, a cheap animal with low yield is no bargain. I asked an experienced dairy woman to come along when buying. Keep the shed clean and give clean water, sick animals eat all your profit in vet bills.

The cooperative pays by fat content, so feeding and clean milking improve your rate, not just the quantity. I joined the cooperative women dairy group and the monthly payment is reliable. Reinvest slowly, one more animal at a time, do not rush into a big herd.
