Frost damaging young mango and guava plants in winter. How to protect orchard from cold.

Young orchard plants are most at risk in a cold wave, so protect them on forecast frost nights. Irrigate the orchard before a frost night because moist soil releases heat and keeps the canopy warmer, and on still clear nights light smoke fires of dry leaves on the upwind side to reduce radiation loss. Wrap or cover young saplings with grass, gunny or straw thatch at night and uncover by day, and protect the graft union. Whitewashing the trunk and a wind break on the cold side help. Avoid late nitrogen so tender flush does not form before winter. Mature trees usually tolerate cold better than first and second year plants. Watch the agromet cold wave warnings and act the evening before, not after damage is done.

I cover my young mango plants with grass thatch on cold nights and uncover in the day. The uncovered ones got burnt tips, covered ones were fine.

Irrigating the orchard before the pala night really helps. The dry block always suffers more frost burn than the watered block.

A wind break on the north west side cut a lot of frost damage for my young guava. I grew a row of tall plants on the cold wind side and the inner plants stayed safer.

Do not give nitrogen heavy fertiliser late in autumn. The fresh soft flush it pushes out gets burnt first in frost. I stopped late urea and the plants harden off better before winter.

Whitewashing the trunk of young plants before winter helped me, and it also keeps borers away in summer. Cheap lime wash, two benefits.

Watch the bulletin and act the evening before, not the morning after. Once the leaves are frosted and the sun hits them it is already too late. Covering or watering has to be done in advance.
