Best mango variety high density planting, Amrapali dwarf aam HDP

Amrapali is the most popular variety for high density and ultra high density mango planting because it is dwarf, regular bearing, and tolerates close spacing well. In high density systems Amrapali is planted much closer than traditional orchards, for example around 2.5 m x 2.5 m, which gives a far higher plant population per acre and earlier, higher yields per unit area, but it needs regular pruning to keep size in check and good fertigation. Other varieties can be used in moderate high density with careful canopy management. Match the variety to your market, since Amrapali fruit is smaller than Alphonso or Dashehari. Confirm exact spacing and rootstock advice with your state horticulture department.

We tried a high density block of Amrapali and the early yield was good, but be honest with yourself about the pruning discipline. Skip the annual post-harvest pruning for even one year and the canopy closes up, shading and disease set in fast. It is a more hands-on system than wide spacing.

Before planting a whole field, check who will buy the smaller Amrapali fruit at a good rate in your area. In our market the bigger varieties fetch more, so I kept only part of the orchard in high density Amrapali and the rest in a market-preferred type.

In our humid coastal conditions the close canopy of high density needed more attention to anthracnose and good air flow. It is doable but plan the spray and pruning schedule before you commit, otherwise disease eats into the early yield advantage.

Buy grafted plants from a reliable nursery and confirm the rootstock advice with your horticulture department. We learned that the planting material quality decides how uniform the block grows, which matters even more when the trees are packed close together.
