Milky mushroom, the white Calocybe type, is ideal for hot regions like Telangana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka because it thrives at warm temperatures of around 25 to 35 degrees where button mushroom cannot grow. Grow it on pasteurised paddy straw in polybags like oyster, but it needs a casing layer of moist soil or coir on top to trigger fruiting. After spawn run, apply casing, maintain high humidity, and pinheads appear in about a week, with harvest stretching over several flushes. It has a longer shelf life than oyster and tolerates transport and heat better, which suits summer markets. Yield is commonly comparable to oyster per bag. Demand is still developing, so build local buyers, hotels and retailers before scaling. Use good spawn, keep hygiene strict, and take a short training from your KVK or a mushroom lab first.
Milky mushroom saved my summer season when it is too hot for others. The casing soil step is important, do not skip it. It stays fresh longer than oyster so I can send it to the town market without it spoiling fast.
Good for heat but the market is smaller than button, so I had to educate buyers and hotels first. Once they tried it, repeat orders came. Keep the casing moist and the room humid for good pinning.
