Mushroom farming can be started in a small room and is profitable if you secure buyers first. Oyster mushrooms are easiest for beginners (low cost, grow on pasteurised straw, no cooling needed in many areas), while button mushrooms need temperature control (around 16 to 24 C) and more investment. Basic steps: get good spawn from a reliable source, prepare and pasteurise substrate, fill bags, maintain humidity and ventilation, and harvest in roughly 3 to 6 weeks depending on type. A small oyster setup can start with a few thousand rupees of spawn and bags. Returns depend on consistent quality and a market (hotels, local vendors, dried mushroom sales). Take training from a KVK or state horticulture department first. Margins are good but perishability and marketing are the real challenges.

I started with 100 oyster mushroom bags in a spare room after a KVK training. Selling fresh to local vegetable shops worked best. Keep humidity right or the crop fails.

The real headache is marketing, not growing. Fresh mushrooms last only a day or two, so if you cannot sell quickly you lose the crop. I solved it by also drying part of my oyster harvest and selling dried mushrooms, which keep for months and travel well. Line up your buyers before your first flush.

Source spawn only from a reliable lab. Cheap or old spawn gave me poor yields and contamination in my first batch. A good spawn supplier plus clean pasteurisation makes the difference between profit and a shed full of green mould. Many KVKs sell quality spawn or can point you to one.

On income, be realistic. A small home setup might earn a modest side income, not a salary, in the first months while you learn. Costs of spawn, bags and electricity for humidity add up. Do not believe the viral posts promising lakhs from a single room. Verify expected rates with local vendors before scaling.

Button mushrooms can earn more per kg but need a cooled room with proper temperature control, which is a big jump in cost and skill. For most beginners, start with oyster in your existing space, master it, and only move to button once you have a steady market and some capital. Buying a cooling setup before you can sell the produce is a common mistake.
