A polyhouse can be very rewarding for high-value crops like coloured capsicum, cucumber, gerbera, rose and exotic vegetables, giving higher yield, year-round production and better quality. Construction cost is roughly Rs 800 to 1,200 plus per square metre for a naturally ventilated polyhouse, so a 1,000 sq m unit can run into several lakh rupees. Many states give 50% or more subsidy under MIDH (Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture), with higher rates for small, SC/ST and NE farmers; rates and ceilings vary by state. Worth it only if you have assured water, electricity, a market for premium produce and willingness to manage it intensively. Get the exact subsidy pattern from your state horticulture department and a realistic project report before building.

The subsidy usually comes as reimbursement after you build and an inspection, not before. So you need to arrange the full amount upfront through savings or a loan first. Plan your cash flow for that gap, many farmers get stuck assuming the subsidy money arrives during construction.

I grow coloured capsicum in a polyhouse in Rajasthan. It works, but the heat here means you must invest in good cooling and shade nets, which adds cost. Pick crops and a design suited to your climate, do not copy a Pune or Bengaluru polyhouse plan directly. Talk to a nearby polyhouse owner before building.
