Under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) Entrepreneurship Development sub-mission, you can get a 50 percent capital subsidy on the eligible project cost for a goat/sheep breeding unit. For a standard unit of 500 goats plus 25 bucks, the subsidy is up to about Rs 50 lakh, released in two instalments, with smaller units (100+5, 200+10, etc.) getting proportionate amounts. You apply online through the NLM portal (nlm.udyamimitra.in) with a bank-appraised project, and the subsidy is back-ended through the financing bank. You need roughly 25 percent margin and a bank term loan for the rest. Confirm current unit sizes and ceilings with your State Animal Husbandry Department before finalising your DPR.

I applied through the NLM portal last year. The DPR and bank tie-up took the most time. Keep land papers, training certificate and quotations ready, it speeds up appraisal.

Since the subsidy is back-ended, plan your cash flow for the first year without it. The money came to my loan account only after the unit was set up and inspected, so I needed working capital for sheds, animals and feed upfront. Do not assume the subsidy will fund construction.

A formal goat farming training certificate from a KVK or recognised institute really helped my file move faster, and I learned practical things about feeding and disease before spending money. Worth doing the training before you even write the project report.
