Yellow, oily looking patches on the upper side of grape leaves with a white downy fungal growth on the underside, especially after rain or heavy dew, are the classic signs of downy mildew. It can also attack shoots and the young bunches, turning berries brown and shrivelled, and it spreads fast in cool wet humid weather. This is one of the most damaging grape diseases, so act on weather. Confirm with your KVK, but the oily spot with white underside growth is distinctive. Manage by reducing leaf wetness and humidity in the canopy: prune and position shoots for good air flow, manage the canopy so it dries quickly, improve drainage, and avoid overhead watering. Watch the weather closely, because the disease explodes after rain. Protective fungicide sprays are usually needed in the wet season, with KVK-recommended actives that may include copper products, mancozeb or specific systemic downy mildew fungicides, applied before infection periods and rotated by mode of action to prevent resistance. Always follow the label, the pre-harvest interval, and the residue and export MRL limits, which are strict for grapes. Plan the spray calendar with your KVK around your local weather pattern.

Downy mildew is all about timing with the rain. We keep protective cover on before the wet spell, not after we see the white growth, because by then the damage to the bunch is done.

Open canopy that dries fast is half the battle. Our shaded thick vines always got downy first. Rotate the fungicide groups or it stops working.
