Grapes fertilizer and nutrient guide

Overview

Grape is a high value vine crop in which nutrition is closely tied to the pruning cycle, since the vine is pruned twice a year in regions like Maharashtra. Nutrients are timed around the foundation pruning that builds canes and the fruit pruning that gives the crop. Grapes need a balanced N:P:K with good potash for berry size, sugar and colour, plus calcium and magnesium for quality. ICAR-NRC Grapes and State Agricultural Universities recommend doses per vine per year, increasingly delivered through drip fertigation for precise control at each stage. The figures below are a per vine per year range. Always adjust them to your Soil Health Card or a fresh soil test, your variety such as Thompson Seedless, Sonaka or Red Globe, the rootstock, and local KVK advice.

Recommended NPK dose for Grapes

A common range for bearing vines is about 100 to 150 g N, 80 to 150 g P2O5 and 100 to 200 g K2O per vine per year, varying with variety, spacing and yield target. Potash is often kept equal to or higher than nitrogen for good berry quality. Doses are usually split between the foundation pruning and the fruit pruning. Treat these as a starting range and fine tune with your Soil Health Card, a fresh soil test, petiole analysis and KVK advice, since grape nutrition is very stage and variety specific.

Application schedule

Apply farmyard manure and the full phosphorus along with part of the nitrogen and potash at or just after the October foundation pruning. Give nitrogen mainly during the shoot growth phase after pruning and reduce it well before flowering. Apply most of the potash from berry set through veraison and ripening to improve size, sugar and colour. In the two pruning regions, balance the dose between the April foundation pruning and the October fruit pruning. Under drip fertigation, split into many small weekly doses matched to each growth stage for best uniformity.

Organic & bio-fertilizers

Apply 10 to 30 kg of well rotted farmyard manure or compost per vine per year, usually at the foundation pruning. Vermicompost at 2 to 5 kg per vine improves soil structure and microbial life. Biofertilizers such as Azotobacter, phosphate solubilising bacteria and potash mobilising bacteria, along with mycorrhiza, support nutrient uptake. Many growers also use a green manure or cover crop in the inter row that is later mulched, which adds organic matter and protects the soil surface in the hot, dry grape regions.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

Grapes commonly need zinc, iron, boron and magnesium. Zinc deficiency causes small leaves, short internodes and poor berry set with many small shot berries. Iron deficiency yellows young leaves with green veins, often on calcareous soils. Boron deficiency leads to poor fruit set, hen and chicken berries and corky tissue. Magnesium deficiency yellows the margins of older leaves. Correct with foliar sprays such as 0.5 percent zinc sulphate, 0.2 percent boric acid and 0.5 percent magnesium sulphate, often before bloom. Always confirm the need with leaf or petiole analysis or KVK advice.

Tips & cautions

Match nutrition to the pruning cycle and the vine stage rather than a fixed calendar. Push nitrogen during shoot growth, then cut it back before flowering to avoid poor set. Load potash from berry set to ripening for size, sugar and colour. Drip fertigation with petiole testing gives the most precise control. Do not over apply nitrogen as it causes excess canopy, poor colour and more disease. Keep the root zone moist but not waterlogged, and avoid placing concentrated fertilizer right against the trunk.

These are general recommendations. For the exact dose, follow your Soil Health Card / soil test and local KVK, and avoid over-applying urea.

FAQs

How much fertilizer does a grape vine need per year?
A bearing vine commonly needs about 100 to 150 g N, 80 to 150 g P2O5 and 100 to 200 g K2O per vine per year, plus 10 to 30 kg FYM, split across the foundation and fruit pruning. Adjust to variety, yield and your soil and petiole tests.
When should I apply nitrogen and potash in grapes?
Apply most nitrogen during shoot growth after pruning and stop it before flowering. Apply most potash from berry set through ripening to improve berry size, sugar and colour. Phosphorus and FYM go in at the foundation pruning.
Why is fertigation recommended for grapes?
Grape nutrition is very stage specific and changes with the pruning cycle. Drip fertigation lets you give small precise doses matched to shoot growth, flowering, berry set and ripening, which improves quality and saves fertilizer compared to soil application.
What causes poor berry set and uneven berries in grapes?
Boron and zinc deficiency are common causes of poor set and uneven hen and chicken berries, along with excess nitrogen near flowering. Spray 0.2 percent boric acid and 0.5 percent zinc sulphate before bloom and confirm with petiole analysis or KVK advice.
