Little millet (kutki) is one of the quickest and hardiest small millets, grown as a rainfed kharif crop sown from June to July with the monsoon, on poor shallow upland soils of tribal eastern and central India. It matures faster than many crops, tolerates drought and low fertility, and so suits late or erratic monsoons and very marginal land. Line sowing gives a better stand and easier weeding than broadcasting the very small seed. It needs few inputs and stores well. With the millet mission it now has rising demand as a healthy grain.
