Is dry peas (matar) profitable and what yield and price range can I expect?

Dry peas (field peas) give a moderate yield of a few quintals per acre with good management, similar order to chana on many soils but with lower water needs. Field pea prices vary by year and quality, and have at times been pulled down by imports, so check the current market rate rather than assuming. As a pulse it improves soil nitrogen for the next crop, and it fits limited irrigation land well. Whether it beats chana for you depends on your soil, price and wilt pressure, since chana faces wilt while peas face powdery mildew. Sell where the rate is best. Ask your KVK or fellow growers for realistic local yields and current rates before deciding.
