Dry peas, also called field peas, are a rabi pulse sown from October to November after the monsoon crop. For a dry grain crop choose field pea varieties bred for grain, which are different from the sweet garden pea types grown for fresh green pods. Field peas are hardy, need less water than many crops, and improve soil nitrogen. Treat seed with Rhizobium and PSB for good nodulation. Sow on time, as very late sowing runs into terminal heat at pod fill and cuts yield. Keep a light irrigation in reserve for flowering and pod fill if the soil dries. Confirm the recommended field pea variety and exact window for your area with your KVK.

For dry grain pick a proper field pea variety, not the sweet vegetable pea. I sow by November so the pods fill before the heat. Rhizobium treatment makes a clear difference in nodulation.

Field peas need less water than wheat, which is why I grow them on my limited irrigation plots. Just do not sow late or the heat catches the pod filling.
