For a kharif red chili crop in the Khammam belt, raise the nursery from May to June with the onset of the monsoon and transplant 35 to 45 day old seedlings in June to July. Many growers in Telangana also take a delayed crop with nursery in July to August for harvest stretching into the dry winter, which gives better colour for dry chili. Transplant on ridges at about 60 by 45 cm or 75 by 60 cm spacing so air moves and disease stays low. Avoid transplanting into waterlogged soil. Confirm the local sowing window and recommended dates with your KVK or the horticulture office, as it shifts with monsoon onset each year.

I raise my mirch nursery on raised beds under a net to keep the sucking pests away in the early stage. That one step cut my leaf curl problem a lot. Transplant in the evening so the seedlings settle without midday heat shock.

Here in Khammam many of us go for the later nursery so the dry chili harvest comes in cool dry weather. The colour holds better and the traders pay more for bright red lots.
