Do not buy from whoever has stock left at the end of the season or chase last year's top hybrid blindly. I ask three or four neighbours in Khammam what actually performed on their black soil this season and cross check with the KVK list. Dealer pushed brands changed every year for me and were not always the best.

Whatever hybrid you pick on heavy black soil, keep the spacing wide enough. These rich soils grow the plant very bushy, and if you plant too close the canopy shuts and you get poor light, more boll rot, and harder spraying. Around 90x60 cm worked better for me than crowding the rows.

Bacterial blight showed up on a susceptible hybrid I grew on irrigated black soil one wet year, with angular spots and black arm on the stem. Since then I prefer a hybrid noted for blight and wilt tolerance and treat the seed as advised. Ask specifically about disease tolerance, not just yield, when choosing.

Hold back the nitrogen a bit on these fertile soils. The first year I gave a heavy hybrid full urea on rich black land it ran to leaf, matured late, and pulled in more whitefly and pink bollworm because the crop was still green and lush late in the season. Balanced feeding gave cleaner, earlier bolls.
