Precision farming can genuinely improve yield and cut input cost, but the gains are real and moderate, not magical, and they come mostly from doing the basics well rather than from gadgets alone. Applying fertiliser based on soil tests, delivering water and nutrients precisely through drip and fertigation, and timing operations using good advisory typically reduce waste of water, fertiliser and chemicals and can lift yields, improving margin. Drones add value mainly by spraying faster, more uniformly, with less chemical and labour, and by helping monitor large fields, but on small plots their cost-benefit is weaker unless hired as a service. The savings are most visible where input use was previously wasteful. The honest caution is that technology only helps if it is used correctly and matched to the farm, buying gear without the knowledge to act on its data brings little benefit. Start with soil testing, drip and advisory to capture most of the gain cheaply, add drones via hiring where it pays, and judge results on your own field over a couple of seasons. Drone spraying saved me labour and chemical on a big field, the coverage was even. On my small plot though, hiring it occasionally made more sense than owning.
