What pests and diseases hit buckwheat (kuttu) and how do I manage them?

Buckwheat is generally a hardy, low problem crop, which is part of why it suits marginal hill land, and it usually does not need much spraying. The main issues tend to be occasional aphids or other sucking pests, some leaf and stem diseases in very wet conditions, and lodging if the crop grows too lush or is hit by wind and rain. Good drainage, proper plant population, and not over fertilising prevent most trouble. Because it is a short duration food crop often grown on poor land with low inputs, heavy chemical use is rarely needed or worthwhile, and as a food grain you should keep any spraying minimal and label compliant with pre harvest interval respected. If a real pest problem appears, get it identified at your KVK before treating.
