Enoki needs a cold controlled room which sounds expensive. Roughly what setup and investment does a small Enoki unit need to start?

Enoki is one of the costlier mushrooms to set up because it needs both sterile production and genuinely cold fruiting, so the cooling is the main expense unless you are in a naturally cold hill area in winter. At a minimum you need a sterilisation unit such as an autoclave for the substrate and bottles, a clean inoculation area such as a laminar flow hood or still air box, an incubation space, and above all a refrigerated or insulated cool room that can hold roughly 8 to 15 degrees C with high humidity for fruiting, plus bottles and collars. The cooled room and its running power cost are what push the investment up, so a small Enoki unit usually costs noticeably more than an equivalent oyster or even button setup, and figures vary so widely with cooling capacity and location that I would treat any number as a rough planning range and price it locally. Because the cost is high and the market is niche and metro centred, confirm both your buyers and a proper equipment quote before investing. Get the setup details from DMR Solan or an SAU and local cold room suppliers.
The cooling was easily my biggest cost and the electricity bill for the cold room is ongoing. Worth it only because I had city buyers. Price the cold room carefully before you commit.
