Bacterial blight, locally called telya, is caused by Xanthomonas and shows as small water-soaked oily spots on leaves and fruit that turn dark and cause cracking and heavy fruit loss; it is one of the biggest threats to pomegranate in the Solapur belt. There is no quick cure, so management is preventive and integrated: use disease-free planting material, follow strict orchard sanitation by removing and destroying infected leaves, fruits, and pruned material, avoid working in wet orchards, and manage the bahar (cropping season) to escape favourable weather. Copper-based and recommended bactericide sprays are used as part of a planned program. Choosing the bahar so the fruit develops in the drier months was the single biggest help for us. Telya explodes in humid, rainy weather, so escaping that window cut our losses more than any spray did. Plan the cropping season around the disease, not just the market.
Do not move through a wet orchard cutting plants, because the bacteria spread on tools and hands and water splash. We sanitise the secateurs between plants and stop field work after rain until things dry. It is tedious but it slows the spread.
Sanitation is constant work here. Removing and burning every infected leaf and fruit, not just leaving them on the ground, keeps the inoculum down for the next flush. The plots that got lazy about clean-up always had worse telya the following season.
Whatever copper or bactericide schedule you follow, get it from the NRC Pomegranate and stick to label doses and intervals. Overdosing copper damaged my young leaves one season without giving better control. The integrated package works better than heavy spraying alone.
Start clean and stay clean. We bought certified disease-free material for the new block and kept it away from the old infected plot, and it stayed much healthier. Telya carried on infected planting material is how a lot of new orchards get it from day one.
