Nutrition is planned around the bahar treatment, when a rest period is followed by irrigation and fertilizer to trigger flowering. The crop needs more nitrogen and potash than phosphorus, with potash being important for fruit size, colour and sweetness. ICAR and State Agricultural Universities recommend doses per plant per year linked to age, applied in two or three splits. The figures below are a per plant per year range. Recommended NPK dose for Pomegranate
For full bearing plants a common range is about 600 to 700 g N, 200 to 250 g P2O5 and 200 to 250 g K2O per plant per year, though many growers keep potash equal to or higher than nitrogen for better fruit quality. Doses build up with age, so a young plant in the first year may get only a quarter to a third of this. This works out to roughly 1.3 to 1.5 kg urea, 1.2 to 1.5 kg single super phosphate and 350 to 420 g muriate of potash for a mature plant. Application schedule
Plan the dose around the chosen bahar. Apply the full FYM and phosphorus along with part of the nitrogen and potash at the start of the bahar after the rest period, when irrigation begins to trigger flowering. Give the remaining nitrogen and potash in two more splits during fruit growth and development. A typical pattern is three split doses spread over the flowering and fruiting period. Apply the mix in a ring basin about one metre away from the trunk, fork it in lightly and irrigate. Keep potash strong during fruit development for size and colour.
Organic & bio-fertilizers
Apply 10 to 20 kg of well rotted farmyard manure or compost per plant per year, usually at the bahar treatment. Vermicompost at 2 to 5 kg per plant and oil cakes such as neem cake improve soil and supply slow nutrients. Biofertilizers like Azotobacter, Azospirillum, phosphate solubilising bacteria and mycorrhiza help nutrient uptake and root health. Mulching the basin with crop residue conserves moisture in the dry growing areas and slowly adds organic matter, which also helps reduce cracking by keeping soil moisture more even.

Pomegranate often needs zinc, iron, boron and manganese, especially on calcareous and alkaline soils. Zinc deficiency causes small narrow leaves and poor growth. Iron deficiency yellows young leaves while veins stay green. Boron deficiency leads to fruit cracking, hard seeds and poor set. Calcium and boron together help reduce the common problem of fruit cracking. Correct with foliar sprays such as 0.5 percent zinc sulphate, 0.5 percent ferrous sulphate and 0.1 to 0.2 percent borax at flowering and early fruit growth. Confirm the need with leaf analysis or KVK advice before spraying.

Boron and calcium sprays plus steady drip irrigation help control cracking. Do not over apply nitrogen as it delays maturity and softens fruit. Apply fertilizer in a basin away from the trunk and never on dry soil without irrigation. Drip fertigation with split doses gives the best size and colour and saves fertilizer.
