want a down to earth idea of stem yield and money from carnation under polyhouse before investing

A well managed carnation crop can give roughly 250 to 350 marketable stems per square metre over the life of the crop, which often runs around 18 to 24 months, so it is not a one season figure. Income depends heavily on stem grade and the rate, which swings a lot, good A grade stems fetch much more during wedding and festival demand and can crash in a glut. Because the rate is so variable, treat any per square metre income figure as a wide range and verify current stem prices at your target market before you plan. The real profit comes from high A grade percentage, steady grading, and a buyer who takes regular supply. Spread your harvest so you are not dumping everything in one low week.
My grade A percent decides everything. When I bunch and grade properly the same flowers sell far better than loose mixed bunches. The market pays for clean uniform bunches.
Do not count on peak rates all year. There are weeks the rate is poor. I survived because the crop runs long and the good weeks made up for the bad ones. Plan for the average, not the best week.
