For high value coloured capsicum, polyhouse or naturally ventilated greenhouse cultivation gives much higher yield and quality than open field, and Himachal mid hills suit it well. Use indeterminate coloured hybrids in red, yellow and orange bred for protected culture, raised in pro trays on coco peat. Transplant on raised beds with drip and mulch, train plants on strings to two or four stems, and remove early flowers and side shoots as recommended. Maintain fertigation with a balanced soluble schedule and manage temperature and humidity with ventilation to avoid blossom end rot and fungal disease. Protected crops can yield several times open field levels over a long harvest. Confirm recommended hybrids and the fertigation schedule with the horticulture university at Nauni or your KVK.

In Solan my naturally ventilated polyhouse coloured capsicum fetches a much better price than green capsicum in the open. The long harvest period and clean fruit make the polyhouse investment pay back over a couple of years.

Before building, check if a government scheme subsidy is open for protected cultivation in your area. My polyhouse cost came down a lot with the horticulture department support. Apply and get approval before you start construction, and verify the current scheme terms at the department office.

Training and timely de shooting are not optional in a polyhouse. The season I let the plants grow bushy the inside got humid and disease set in, and picking was a struggle. Keeping two or four clean stems on strings gave me better airflow and far easier harvesting.

Ventilation management is the daily job that decides quality. If the house gets too hot and the humidity swings, you get blossom end rot and the fruit drops. I open and close the side vents through the day to keep it steady, especially on bright afternoons.
