Banganapalli, also called Benishan or Safeda, is the leading commercial mango of Andhra Pradesh and is grown widely in Telangana too. It has a GI tag (Banaganapalle mango). It is a large, oblong, fibreless mango with firm pulp and yellow skin, valued for good size, eating quality and, importantly, firmness and shelf life that make it travel and store well, which is a big commercial plus. It suits the hot dry climate of Rayalaseema and Telangana on well-drained red and black soils, and is more drought hardy than soft eastern varieties. It is a reliable bearer and is a major variety for the table market across India and for export. Its firmness makes it one of the better-suited Indian mangoes for distant and overseas markets, provided residue and phytosanitary norms are met.
