Okra is sown in two main seasons in Bihar, a summer crop sown around February to March and a kharif crop sown around June to July with the monsoon. Soak seed overnight for better germination. Spacing is commonly about 45 to 60 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants for summer, and slightly wider rows for the rainier kharif crop to improve aeration and reduce disease. Sow on ridges in kharif to avoid waterlogging. Keep the crop weed free in early stages and start picking pods when tender, usually 5 to 6 days after flowering. For the exact seed rate and locally adapted variety, check with your district agriculture office as it varies by season and variety.

Soaking the seed overnight made a clear difference in my summer sowing near Patna. Dry seed in the cold February soil came up slow and patchy. After an overnight soak the germination was faster and more even.

For the kharif crop, sowing on ridges saved me when the rains came heavy. On flat beds the seed rotted in the standing water. The ridge keeps the roots above the waterlogging and the plants stay healthier.

The very early summer crop fetches a good price in our market because supply is low. But there is a frost risk if you sow too soon, so I wait until the cold snaps are clearly over. A failed early sowing costs more than the extra price is worth.

Weed the okra well in the first few weeks. The young plants are slow and weeds smother them quickly in the warm Patna weather. Once I kept the early crop clean the plants picked up speed and pod yield improved.
