Okra faces shoot and fruit borer plus sucking pests like jassids, aphids and whitefly which also spread yellow vein mosaic virus. Pick and destroy bored fruits and clip wilted shoots regularly, and remove plants showing strong yellow vein mosaic since there is no cure for the virus. Manage sucking pests with yellow sticky traps and need based, rotated insecticides; neem based sprays help at low pressure. Choose yellow vein mosaic tolerant varieties where available and keep the crop weed free as weeds host whitefly. Harvest tender pods frequently every 2 to 3 days, which also reduces borer carryover. Confirm currently approved insecticides and tolerant varieties with your KVK or the local horticulture office.

Yellow vein mosaic ruined my bhindi one season. Now I pull out infected plants quickly and control whitefly early, and I picked a tolerant variety on the advice of our KVK. Much better results.

Frequent picking is the simple trick people skip. In summer I pick every second day. If pods get even a little over mature, jassid damage and borer holes show up more and the trader pays less. Tender, regular picking also keeps the plant flowering.

Jassid attack shows as the leaf edges turning yellow then bronze and curling down, what we call hopper burn. I watch the undersides of young leaves in the early crop and act when I first see the tiny green hoppers, because once hopper burn sets in the yield is already cut.
