Durian can be grown in India only in the warmest, most humid, frost free tropical pockets with high and well distributed rainfall, such as parts of coastal and high rainfall Kerala, coastal Karnataka, parts of the North East and a few similar belts; it is still very much an experimental, niche crop here. The tree needs deep, fertile, well drained soil, high humidity, warm temperatures year round, no frost, and shelter from strong winds because the heavy fruit and brittle branches are vulnerable. It will not tolerate drought, cold or waterlogging. Because it is so new in India, reliable planting material and proven local agronomy are limited, so the risk is high and you should treat any planting as a trial. Before spending money, talk to a horticulture research station or KVK, find anyone already growing it in your region, and start with only a few trees to learn before any larger planting. Do not expect easy success in dry or interior areas.

A few of us in the high rainfall belt are trying durian on a small scale. It is early days and survival in the young stage is the main challenge. I would not advise anyone to plant a big block yet, keep it as a trial.

Genuine grafted durian planting material is hard to find here and prices are high. Be very careful who you buy from. Many seedlings sold as durian are unproven.
