Zaid is the short summer window between rabi harvest and kharif sowing, roughly March to June, and the best fit is a quick short duration crop that can take heat and finishes before kharif. The classic zaid earners are summer green gram (moong), which matures in about 60 to 70 days and leaves nitrogen behind for the next crop, and cucurbits like watermelon, muskmelon, bottle gourd, bitter gourd and cucumber, which fetch good summer prices in town markets. Summer fodder such as maize, sorghum or cowpea is useful if you keep animals. Summer sesame and a quick crop of leafy vegetables also work where water allows. The two conditions for zaid are assured irrigation, since the heat dries fields fast, and choosing a duration that clears the field in time for your main kharif crop. The big advantage is an extra income from land that would otherwise sit empty, but do not pick anything that delays your kharif sowing. Confirm the variety and exact sowing window for your district with your KVK and check what the summer market is paying.

Summer moong is my favourite zaid crop. Extra money in 60 odd days and my paddy or maize after it needs less urea. Win on both sides.

I grow bottle gourd and cucumber in zaid for the local market. Good price in May heat but you must have water and pick daily. Without sure irrigation do not attempt summer vegetables.
