When and how to raise an onion (pyaaz) nursery for kharif in Karnataka?

For kharif onion in Karnataka, sow the nursery around May to June and transplant in July, using kharif suited varieties like Bhima Super, Bhima Dark Red, Agrifound Dark Red or Arka Kalyan. Make raised seed beds about 10 to 15 cm high and 1 metre wide to drain off rain, add FYM, and treat seed with a fungicide like thiram or carbendazim before sowing. You need roughly 8 to 10 kg of seed per hectare. Sow in shallow lines, cover lightly, and protect from heavy rain with a shade or low cover. Keep beds moist but not waterlogged and watch for damping off. Seedlings are ready to transplant at about 6 to 7 weeks, pencil thickness.
