When I hire workers, what am I actually responsible for? I want to be fair and stay out of trouble. Are there rules I should know?

Beyond paying the agreed wage, a few responsibilities are both the law and good practice. Pay at least the state notified minimum agricultural wage for your area, paid on time, this is a legal floor. Provide safe working conditions, especially when workers handle pesticides, machinery or sharp tools, give basic protection and clear instructions and never send untrained people to do hazardous work. Do not employ children, child labour is prohibited. Maintain decent basics like drinking water and rest, particularly in heat. If you provide accommodation to migrant or permanent workers it should be safe and clean. Treat all workers with dignity and pay equal wages for equal work regardless of gender. Rules and notified wage rates vary by state and change over time, so confirm the current minimum agricultural wage and any local requirements with your labour office or panchayat. Being a fair, lawful employer also makes you the farmer workers want to return to.
The pesticide safety point is important. I give my sprayer a mask, gloves and clear timing instructions now after a worker fell sick years ago. Never again.
