Both are used for soil preparation. When should I use a cultivator and when a rotavator?

Use a cultivator for primary loosening and weed uprooting in standing or stubble fields, and a rotavator for fine seedbed preparation and mixing residue into soil. A cultivator (tine type) breaks and loosens soil to good depth with low fuel use and is great for the first pass and inter cultivation. A rotavator uses rotating blades to chop, pulverise and level in one or two passes, giving a ready fine tilth, but burns more diesel and wears blades. Many farmers use a cultivator first then a rotavator for finishing. Choose based on whether you need deep loosening (cultivator) or a fine ready seedbed (rotavator).

I use the cultivator for the first ploughing after harvest and the rotavator just before sowing for a fine bed. Using only the rotavator every time wastes diesel and blades.

For weed control between passes a cultivator is cheaper and faster. The rotavator I keep only for final seedbed work. Both have their place.
