Mustard yield falls sharply with late sowing because the crop runs into terminal heat and heavy aphid pressure at flowering and podding, and very late crops can lose a large share of yield. The optimum window is generally mid-October to mid-November in much of Rajasthan, and sowing into December usually cuts yield substantially. If you must sow late, choose an early-maturing variety, raise the seed rate slightly, ensure timely irrigation and watch aphids closely. The exact cut-off and recommended late variety vary by district, so confirm with your KVK before deciding whether to sow or switch crops.

If you must sow late, give the irrigations on time and do not let the crop face moisture stress, because a late crop is already stressed by the heat and skipping a watering makes the pinched seed much worse. Timely water at flowering and pod fill saved part of my late mustard one year.

Raising the seed rate a little for late sowing helped my stand, since late mustard branches less and you need more plants to make up for it. Combined with an early variety and timely irrigation it gave me a fair crop even from a delayed sowing, though never as good as timely.

My late-sown mustard always gets hit harder by aphids at flowering because the warm spell arrives just as it is podding. If you do sow late, be ready to scout and spray aphids on time, that is where the late crop loses the most for me.

Keep a close watch for the aphid on a late crop and have your spray ready, because the warm spell that hits late mustard at flowering brings the aphid right when it does the most damage. The late years I scouted and sprayed on time lost far less than when I was caught off guard.

If it is getting really late in my area I switch to an early-maturing variety so the crop still finishes before the heat. A short-duration variety sown a bit late beats a long-duration one that gets caught flowering in the heat. Ask the KVK which early type suits your zone.

Honestly, past a point it is worth comparing with another crop instead of forcing very late mustard. One bad late year I would have done better with a short pulse on that plot. Weigh the likely poor mustard return against an alternative before you sow too late.
