Mustard intercrops well with both chickpea and wheat and is a popular risk-reducing combination, with common row arrangements such as a few rows of the main crop to one or two rows of mustard, for example a 6:2 or 9:1 type ratio depending on the crop. The mustard acts as a border and trap, can earn extra income, and the legume in chickpea-mustard adds soil benefit. Keep the base crop population near normal and treat mustard as the additive row so total yield is not reduced. Exact ratios and spacing should be confirmed with your KVK for your soil and sowing time.

I sow a couple of mustard rows after every several rows of chana. The mustard gives bonus income and the field looks balanced.

With wheat-mustard intercrop, keep in mind the mustard matures earlier than the wheat, so plan how you will harvest the mustard rows without trampling the standing wheat. I keep the mustard rows accessible from the edge or in clear lines so I can cut them first without damage.
