How much fertiliser and irrigation does mustard (sarson) need?

For irrigated mustard, a common recommendation is around 80 to 100 kg nitrogen, 40 to 60 kg phosphorus, and 40 kg potash per hectare, with sulphur being very important for oilseeds at about 20 to 40 kg per hectare since it raises oil content. Apply half the nitrogen and full phosphorus, potash and sulphur at sowing and the remaining nitrogen with the first irrigation. Mustard usually needs two irrigations under north India conditions, the first critical one at about 30 to 35 days (pre flowering) and the second at the siliqua or pod filling stage; a single irrigation crop is given water at flowering. Adjust to your soil test and local recommendation, and confirm doses with your KVK.

Sulphur is the one people skip and it really shows in oil content. In Haryana I apply gypsum or a sulphur bearing fertiliser at sowing for my mustard, and both yield and the oil out turn at the ghani improved. Get a Soil Health Card test, because many of our fields are short on sulphur.

The first irrigation timing at about 30 to 35 days is the one not to miss; that pre flowering water set the whole crop for me. I keep the irrigation light and avoid heavy flooding, especially if a strong wind is expected, because waterlogged or lodged mustard loses yield.

Base your nitrogen on a soil test rather than just piling on urea. Excess nitrogen made my crop grow tall and lush, lodge in wind and pull in more aphids, without extra yield. Balanced NPK with sulphur on a Soil Health Card recommendation worked better and cheaper for me.
