Overview

A polyhouse is a greenhouse covered with a special UV stabilised polythene film inside which you can partly control temperature, humidity and light. Because the crop is protected from rain, wind, frost and many pests, you can grow high value vegetables such as coloured capsicum, cucumber, tomato and exotic greens almost all year and get cleaner, more uniform produce than open fields. Polyhouses come in naturally ventilated and fan and pad cooled types, and most Indian vegetable farmers use the naturally ventilated kind because it costs less to run. The system needs drip irrigation, fertigation and steady management. It is a real business that rewards skill and discipline more than luck, and it carries higher capital cost and crop risk than open farming. With good agronomy, a polyhouse can lift yields and prices enough to repay the structure over a few years, but poor management can wipe out a whole crop fast.

Climate

A polyhouse itself moderates climate, so it works near almost any city. Naturally ventilated polyhouses suit most of plains India for capsicum, cucumber and tomato. In very hot regions you may need extra shading, fogging or fan and pad cooling, while in cold hill areas a polyhouse extends the season and protects against frost. Site it in an open, sunny spot with assured water and power.

Soil

Most polyhouse vegetables are grown in raised soil beds enriched with well rotted compost, or in soilless media like cocopeat for some crops. The growing soil must be well drained, sterilised or solarised before planting, and slightly acidic to neutral. Drip lines and fertigation deliver water and nutrients precisely. Get the soil tested and add gypsum or organic matter as advised to avoid salt build up over repeated crops.

Varieties

Two main structure types exist. Naturally ventilated polyhouses use roof vents and side curtains and are cheaper to build and run, suiting most of India. Fan and pad or climate controlled polyhouses give tighter control for high end or hot climate growing but cost much more. Low cost or low tunnel structures are a cheaper entry point. Within these, choose hybrid seed bred for protected cultivation rather than open field varieties.

Care & Management

Polyhouse success depends on daily skilled management. You must control ventilation, humidity and temperature, run a precise fertigation schedule, train and prune plants, and watch the crop closely. Maintain the polythene film, repair tears, keep insect nets intact at vents and follow strict hygiene at the entry. This is knowledge intensive work, so training and a mentor or good consultant make a big difference, especially in the first year.

Pests & Diseases

A closed structure keeps out many pests but if a pest does get in it can spread fast. Watch for whitefly, thrips, mites, aphids and leaf miner, and for fungal and bacterial diseases that thrive in high humidity. Use insect proof nets at vents, sticky traps, biocontrol and good sanitation, and ventilate to cut humidity. Root knot nematode and soil borne wilt can build up over repeated crops, so rotate or use grafted plants and soil treatment.

Protected vegetables usually yield several times more per unit area than open field crops, and the produce is cleaner, more uniform and graded for premium markets.
