Overview

Bhagwa, also called Sindhuri, is India's leading commercial pomegranate variety and the mainstay of both domestic and export trade. Prized for its glossy saffron-red rind, soft seeds, sweet bold red arils and thick peel that withstands long-distance transport, Bhagwa dominates orchards across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Maharashtra alone accounts for the majority of India's production, supported by APEDA-certified pack-houses and cold chain for shipments to Europe, the Gulf, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. A key advantage is bahar management, where flowering is regulated through controlled stress and irrigation so growers can target the most profitable market window. Climate

Pomegranate thrives in hot, dry, semi-arid climates. It needs hot, dry summers for fruit development and high sugar, and cool winters during dormancy. Temperatures up to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius are tolerated, and the crop is drought-hardy. High humidity and rain during flowering and fruiting raise disease and cracking, so dry regions of the Deccan and western India are ideal.

Soil

Pomegranate grows on a wide range of soils but does best on deep, well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soils. It tolerates slightly alkaline and saline soils and marginal land better than most fruits. A pH of 6.5 to 7.5 is ideal. Heavy, waterlogged soils invite wilt and root problems, so drainage is the single most important soil factor.

Planting & Spacing

Orchards are established from air-layered or tissue-culture plants, usually at spacings of about 4.5 by 3 metres or denser high-density layouts of around 5 by 2 metres, giving roughly 250 to 600 plants per acre. Pits are prepared with farmyard manure and planting is commonly done at the onset of monsoon or in spring with assured irrigation. Drip irrigation is installed from the start for water efficiency and fertigation.

Varieties

Bhagwa (Sindhuri) is the leading variety for its colour, soft seeds and shelf life. Other notable varieties include Ganesh, Mridula, Arakta, Ruby and Phule Arakta. Bhagwa is preferred for export due to its attractive rind and transport-friendly thick peel, while Ganesh and Mridula serve domestic and processing markets. Care & Management

Bahar regulation is central: by withholding water to induce stress and then resuming irrigation and fertigation, growers force flowering for the chosen ambe (spring), mrig (monsoon) or hasta (winter) bahar to hit the best market. Drip fertigation, balanced nutrition, training to a multi-stem or single-stem frame, and fruit thinning improve size and quality. Bagging fruits protects against sunburn, borers and disease.

Pests & Diseases

Bacterial blight (oily spot) caused by Xanthomonas and wilt are the most serious problems, capable of destroying orchards if hygiene is poor; integrated management, clean planting material and orchard sanitation are vital. Fruit borer, anar butterfly, thrips, mealybug and aphids attack the crop, and fruit cracking and sunburn cause physical losses. Bagging and timely sprays reduce damage.

Yield & Harvest

Fruits mature about 5 to 7 months after flowering, depending on the bahar. Harvest readiness is judged by rind colour turning saffron-red, a metallic sound on tapping and aril development. Fruits are clipped, not pulled, then graded by size and colour and packed under cold chain for export or sent to mandis. Careful handling avoids bruising on the thick but bruise-sensitive rind.

Cost & Profit

Establishment runs to a few lakh rupees per acre over the first two to three years for plants, drip and trellis. Yields commonly rise from a few tonnes in early years to around 4 to 7 tonnes per acre in full bearing by year five onwards. Export-grade fruit has fetched roughly USD 1.5 to 2.3 per kg, while domestic prices swing widely by season and quality.
