What can a part time farmer realistically grow on one acre alongside a regular job?

I have a job in town and one acre near my village. I can give time only on weekends and evenings. What is realistic to grow without daily attention?

For a part time farmer, choose crops that do not need daily care and tie up with a hired helper or your family for routine work. Practical options on one acre include a tree or fruit orchard like custard apple, lemon or guava once established, hardy field crops suited to your area with drip irrigation on an automatic timer, or a long duration crop you can manage on weekends. Avoid highly perishable, labour heavy vegetables that need daily harvesting and marketing unless you have reliable help. Drip irrigation with automation cuts the daily watering burden, and a small farm pond or assured water source reduces stress. Start with one low maintenance crop, learn the rhythm, and keep a trusted local person to watch the field on weekdays. Match the crop to your soil and water with help from your KVK.

With my town job I could only manage weekends, so I planted lemon and a few fruit trees with drip on a timer; once established they need little weekly care. Daily harvest vegetables would have been impossible. Pick crops that forgive a few missed days.

On hiring versus owning machines as a part timer, I do not buy a tractor or tiller for one acre I touch only on weekends. I hire a tiller and a sprayer through the local custom hiring centre when needed, which is far cheaper than owning idle machinery. Spend on the orchard and drip, not on machines you will rarely run.

I work in the city and planted lemon and a few fruit trees on my one acre with drip on a timer. After they established they need little weekly care. Daily vegetables would have been impossible with my job.

I kept a trusted local person to watch and water my field on weekdays, which made part time farming workable. Without reliable help even hardy crops can suffer. Automating irrigation and having someone on the ground are what make it realistic alongside a job.

Be honest that part time farm income is modest and slow to start, especially with an orchard that takes a few years to bear. My lemon and guava gave little in the early years; the steady earning came later. Keep your costs low, treat it as a long build alongside your job, and do not expect quick returns. A KVK visit helped me pick crops suited to my soil.
